How often should I have my Furnace or Boiler Checked?

Ideally, your heating system should be checked by a licensed professional yearly. This will help in the elimination of possible break downs and expensive repairs, and keep it running at peak efficiency. Heating system checks will also aid in lengthening the life of your system.

What is the big deal about high efficiency furnaces?

AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency) is the standard measurement of efficiency for gas and oil-fired furnaces. Given in percentage, this number tells you how much of your fuel is used to heat your home and how much fuel is wasted. The higher the AFUE rating is, the greater the efficiency.

Cost Savings: If you have an older furnace (with an AFUE of approximately 60%), you could save up to 40% on your heating bills by replacing it with a new high efficiency furnace! The cost to replace your old, inefficient furnace is paid back through lower utility bills.

How often should I change my filter?

Filters should be changed every 30 days of continuous operation. Purchase a pleated filter from your local hardware store for about $3.00 or less. Avoid the cheap ones that you can see through, as they allow too much dirt and debris to pass through them.

Do I need a humidifier?

Certainly! Inadequate humidification during cold weather is one of the major causes of respiratory infections. The heating seasons causes people to begin having repeated attacks of winter colds. Winter is blamed for these problems, but the actual cause is dryness, which develops in the membranes of the nose, throat, and bronchial tubes. Relative humidity also has a significant effect on controlling the occurrence of airborne infections.

Additionally, virtually all the woodwork in your home contains some moisture. As dry air sucks the moisture out the wood shrinks and cracks. Hardwood floors separate at the seams, furniture shrinks and cracks, the doors wrap and no longer fit their frames and the moisture is drawn off.
